Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village Families,

What an incredible start to the year we have had!

Thank you for coming to our Stargazing Concert last weekend (recap below).  It was just spectacular to see so many new and returning families in attendance, talking, sharing food, singing, dancing and enjoying our compassionate community.  I can speak for the band in saying, we had copious amounts of fun. Thank you to: The Maple Village People band -  Andreas and Francesca Preponis, Lane Campbell, Jason Walker, Ernie Ruckman, Alyssa Bishop, and Jake Abernathie; to  Kari Rahni for securing our space; to our Parent Village Chairs,  Britt Sexton and Jennie Virgilio for hosting our welcome table; to all the families who  brought baked donations and to everyone who supported this event!

Last night, I was blown away by the attendance at our first Parent Village meeting. I counted over 60 in attendance! We are so fortunate to have such a diverse population all working together as a whole.  In fact, we are the most diverse Waldorf School in Southern California and most likely in the state.   Please see our Diversity Statement on our website here, to understand our position and what we are doing to serve our community.  Diversity | Home | Maple Village Waldorf School | Children's Waldorf Education

Next week I will be traveling to Washington D.C. to accept our United States Department of Education Green Ribbon School award! The ceremony is on Wednesday, September 19th, which also happens to coincide with Waldorf School’s 99th anniversary! For those of you who want to watch at home (or at a viewing party with friends, as was recently suggested), here is the information (and I’ll try to not do anything embarrassing on stage):

Livestream Viewing
Wednesday, September 19th, 11:00 - 1:00 Pacific Time on the U.S. Department of Education’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ed.gov.

11:00 a.m. — 11:20 a.m.              Keynote Speakers
11:20 a.m. — 12:40 p.m.              Presentation of Awards (These will be awarded by state, so according to the program, we are second.)
12:40 p.m. — 1:00 p.m.              Closing Remarks

Why do I love my job? In between working with students, teachers, parents, admin staff, our Board, and interested applicants … I get to slow down and spend precious moments with preschoolers who miss their parents.  In that golden world, we found this in the garden, and did some home-improvement together.

Have a wonderful week ahead, and I’ll see you when I return!

With appreciation,
Lisa

Parent Village
Scrip Program
Hi Village,
I thought I would strike while the iron is hot from tonight's Parent Village meeting. Here is a list of all of the companies from whom we buy our Scrip cards or companies that will facilitate our Scrip earnings.

Shop With Scrip

This is our school's best money maker. You must register your debit card/checking account details and get a Presto Pay PIN number. Once you have done this, you can go to www.myscripwallet.com which is a shortcut to Shop With Scrip that you can add to your home screen on your mobile phone. It looks like an app. You log in with the same email and password that you use for Shop With Scrip.

To add My Scrip Wallet to your home screen on your phone, iPhone users can tap the up arrow icon at the very bottom of your screen (the icon that looks like an arrow in a square), then choose “add to home screen”.

On an Android phone, tap the menu button in Chrome (probably 3 dots at the top right corner of the screen) and then choose “Add to homescreen”.  If you use Firefox for Android, press the menu button, click the “page” option, and then tap “Add to home screen”.  An icon will now appear on the home screen of your smartphone.

I stood with one parent tonight who signed up with Shop With Scrip, registered with Presto Pay, and bought two Amazon cards in less than 10 minutes.

Right now, you can use your credit card to sign up with the following companies who give us Scrip money:

Benefit

Lazy Acres
With the use of their club card, you can earn Scrip for MVWS, but you have to register the card for Maple Village donations with their customer service desk and use the card every time you shop (you can't just give a phone number linked to the card).

Escrip Dining
Register with Escrip with your credit card and our school makes money from participating restaurants. There are several local restaurants, like Riley's in Belmont Shore or La Parolaccia on Broadway, that participate in donating to our school via Escrip.

Mighty Nest
Buy natural products like sunscreens, makeup, feminine products, water bottles, food storage containers, etc.

iGive
Another online "mall" of sorts where you buy the products you want through their website, and our school gets some Scrip. A good example is this: I bought baseball tickets through StubHub, but I logged into iGive first, found the link to Stub Hub, and then bought the tickets through that site. It looked exactly like the actual Stub Hub website, but the school made $6 from a simple extra click of the mouse by starting with iGive.

Bridge Ceremony

Our new first grade class crossed the rainbow bridge from early childhood to the grades on our first day of school.  Welcome, Laurels!!

Communications & Outreach Coordinator
(or CoCo for short) Corner

I wanted to thank everyone who came out to this year’s Stargazing Concert. I have been to many, and I have to say that this one was one of my favorites! The band was awesome! The families were awesome! The Welcome and Bake Sale tables were awesome! The location was awesome! It truly touches my heart to see so many of us together in one place enjoying each others company and listening to our soooo very talented faculty and parents. They get together on their free time during the Summer to rehearse for this one night….just for us. I’m not just being biased. I have heard from so many of you that this was truly a magical night.

“Thank you to all who put on the stargazing concert at Marina Vista. My family and I had a great time seeing our friends and enjoying the park that we spend so much time at with the Farmers market and our Maple Village friends. It was truly a magical night. I got to dance under the stars and many planets out that night, with my Nova, newly in kindergarten at MV, while my freshly graduated older daughter got to hang with her friends who also used to go to Maple Village, and my husband got to sit contently and listen to music. We danced the end of the night away and when we were too tired and needed to sit down, Nova sat on my lap and we talked about what stargazing meant. “Gazing is a fancy word for looking,” I said, “so we are looking or gazing at the stars.” She liked this and put her hand up and with her fingers, starting plucking stars from the sky. My heart filled with so much love and gratitude. Thanks everyone for making it such a great night!”

“Hi Lisa, I just wanted to share what a magical experience we had at the stargazing concert. I couldn’t get over the incredible sense of community, love, and thoughtfulness all around. Watching all the kids running around playing, people singing along… It really was amazing. Thank you for building this special space.”

I wanted to also thank all of you that baked the yummy treats. We may have to make a MVWS recipe book!

On a “Social” note, I wanted to thank those who have “commented” “liked” and shared posts from Facebook and Instagram. It makes a big impact! Please keep it up!

In Gratitude,

Kari
