Letter from our Dean
Dear Maple Village families,

As I look at the calendar, it is evident our school year is underway with so many events!

First of all, I want to thank our faculty, staff, parents and students for helping to make our very first Grandparents & Special Friends Day such a huge delight and success. We had over 100 guests in attendance, and they enjoyed performances by the students in the sanctuary, along with focused time in the classrooms seeing the students’ work, being entertained, and some even participating in a drawing lesson.  I had the pleasure of giving a presentation to all of our guests and then talking to so many of them individually.  The feedback we received was so inspiring! I heard from many that this day really helped them to understand what we are doing here and more importantly, why.   A big thank you to all of our guests for also paying close attention to those students who did not have a special guest and making time for them too.  We are truly one big family.  Thank you to our Hospitality Committee for providing so many delicious refreshments as well!

This Saturday morning, you are welcome to come to our first "Coffee with the Board.”  This is your chance to meet some of our Board members, ask questions and share thoughts and ideas.  Please see details below.

Next Friday, I will begin to host Discussion with the Dean again.  Please join if you can. All information is posted below.

AND... one of my favorite events of the year is almost here!

Save the Date for our Annual Lantern Walk
Thursday, November 8th
4:30 - 5:30
Marina Vista Park
This is an event for all classes.
Details will be in next Friday’s bulletin.

Have a beautiful weekend.  Tonight, we will actually have our two college sons and our high school son together at once for a few hours at UCLA.  They grow and stretch their wings so quickly.  Enjoy this time!

Warmly,
Lisa

Halloween Costume Parade & Guidelines - Grades 1-8

The Maple Village Waldorf School Costume Parade will take place Halloween Wednesday, October 31st at 1:30 pm.  All grades will parade from their classrooms to the play yard in costume, sing a song or two, and dismiss.  Parents are welcome!!  Please stay on the sidewalk due to limited space inside the play yard.

Halloween Costume Guidelines:

  • If you wish to participate, send your child to school on Halloween morning with their costume stored in a bag or backpack.  Please check with your child’s teacher for details on the transition to costume.
  • Costumes must be media-free and masks are not permitted. Instead consider costumes inspired by the rich Waldorf curriculum. Save the props (and swords) for use at home later.
  • If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher.
Early childhood students will not be wearing costumes at school on Halloween.
Coffee with the Board

Please join members of the Board of Trustees for an informal conversation over tea or coffee on Saturday October 27, 9:30 to 11:30 in the Social Hall. This is the first of a series planned for this year.
We want to know what's on your mind, how we can work together to support this vibrant community at Maple Village, and we will attempt to respond to questions you may have.

Tea and light refreshments will be provided.

As this is an adult conversation, please make other appropriate arrangements for your children. Childcare will not be provided.

On behalf of the Board, we look forward to meeting you there!

Darshi Balasuriya (President)
Elizabeth Seward (Vice President)

Dia de los Muertos

Greetings Dear Families,

We will be honoring the traditional Mexican celebration Dia de los Muertos in The Grove Wednesday October 31st through Friday November 2nd. You are invited to bring a picture of a beloved family member who has passed on (pets also welcome) that can be placed on the table. Along with the picture you may bring a small memento or food item they loved during their living years. Placement is Wednesday, and pickup of all items must occur on Friday.

Dia de los Muertos is a time of remembrance that provides us the living a space to pay regards to the souls we love as they continue on their spiritual journey.
If you wish to learn more about this traditional holiday check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead
or hang out with your kiddos and watch the movie Coco, which is a playful and beautiful rendition of the significance of the holiday.

Don't forget to share our
Maple Village Harvest Faire ~ Harvest Around the World Facebook Event Page with family, friends, and other FB groups!

Thank you for sharing your ideas for the Cultural Village at our annual Harvest Faire!  We had lots of creative, practical and fun ideas to choose from, which really helped in the planning of the event.  Now we are busy developing some of those ideas and will be executing them all on November 17th!!

As you have heard from your room parents, we are expanding our presentation of harvest traditions to include customs from around the world.  Our goal is to bring heart and authenticity to every area of our diverse Cultural Village.

Did you know that not only is our Harvest Faire the biggest event Maple Village has every year, but it is also completely planned, developed and executed by volunteers?!  It's true! That is why volunteer participation is so important - and what a great way to get to know other villagers (and get volunteer hours)!

We still need a few areas covered and would like to ask you to consider helping in one of them.  Please see details below.  Also, if you know someone who would like to help, please let Meghan or Kari know.

The Maple Village Waldorf School Harvest Faire 2018 will be wonderful - because of people like you!  Whether you volunteer to chair, co-chair, assist, share your ideas, invite more people, share our FB Event Page or just bring your family and have fun, every effort counts.  So please take a look at the areas of need below and don't forget to invite your family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances and everyone else you choose!

We still need some Sub-Chair People for the following areas:

Breakdown:  This person (people) will help Kari plan leading up to the event and oversee the breakdown on Saturday the 17th after the event from 4-7pm.  We will also need someone to help finish up the breakdown and clean up for Sunday the 18th.

Decoration Station:  This person will work with Andrea Bush who is in charge of all Craft Stations to oversee this particular booth.  This area will have stencils, paint and decor for the children to make their shields, swords, etc. uniquely theirs.

Bubbles:  This person will work with Andrea Bush who is in charge of all Craft Stations to oversee this particular booth and set it up.

Donation/Sponsorship Outreach
Do you know of someone who would want to sponsor an area or buy ad space in our program?  Starting at $50 we will feature them in our program and on our social media platforms leading up to the event.  This will be a tax write-off for them and help us tremendously.  Please contact Daisy Campos (daisy_campos@hotmail.com).

Thank you all for your time and commitment to our school and making this Faire wonderful!

In Gratitude,
Kari w/ Meghan
